Abstract

[cat] La present tesi doctoral –titulada “Ciutat i riu. Mig segle de transformacions urbanístiques als espais fluvials de quatre poblacions catalanes (Manlleu i el Ter, Terrassa i les seves rieres, Lleida i el Segre, Sant Adrià de Besòs) i una de francesa (Lió, el Roine i el Saona)”– planteja, com a principal objectiu, abordar la comprensió geogràfica de la relació entre ciutat i riu a partir de l’estudi de l’evolució i la transformació històrica i espacial dels espais urbanofluvials vinculats a quatre casos d’estudi catalans (Manlleu, Terrassa, Lleida i Sant Adrià de Besòs) i un d’estranger (la ciutat francesa de Lió). La recerca parteix de la hipòtesi que els espais urbanofluvials corresponents a cada cas d’estudi han sofert, al llarg de l’últim mig segle, una transformació profunda a nivell urbanístic que ha donat peu a la seva reconfiguració espacial, canvi que pot ésser explicat a partir dels projectes històrics generats per la planificació urbanística; del tractament i l’execució d’aquests projectes per part de les administracions competents i, també, a partir de la influència dels inputs històrics vinculats al medi fluvial i urbà, com ara els episodis d’inundació. Es proposa una aproximació metodològica basada en les dues fases pròpies d’un exercici d’investigació geogràfica. D’una banda, una primera anàlisi de caràcter historicourbanístic, amb l’objectiu de documentar, revisar i interpretar les determinacions i previsions de la planificació urbanística generada a nivell local en cadascun dels casos d’estudi, amb un horitzó temporal delimitat entre els anys cinquanta fins a l’actualitat i, de forma complementària, amb la realització d’una sèrie d’entrevistes en profunditat a tècnics experts vinculats amb l’objecte de la investigació. De l’altra, una anàlisi cartogràfica centrada en l’estudi de canvi d’ocupació del sòl dels espais urbanofluvials dels casos estudiats amb l’objectiu de comparar, mitjançant l’ús d’ortofotografia digital aèria, dos escenaris temporalment diferents (1956-2012, per als casos d’estudi catalans, i 1960-2011, per al cas d’estudi francès). A nivell de l’estructura, la recerca es compon de deu capítols, agrupats en cinc parts que constitueixen el cos del treball. La primera part té la funció de presentar formalment els aspectes teòrics i metodològics de la recerca. La segona part engloba quatre capítols, un per a cada cas d’estudi (Manlleu, Terrassa, Lleida i Sant Adrià de Besòs), integrats per diversos apartats centrats en la seva contextualització geogràfica, en l’anàlisi de la planificació urbanística i l’estudi del canvi d’ocupació del sòl. La tercera part de la investigació és íntegrament dedicada a l’anàlisi de la ciutat francesa de Lió. Finalment, la quarta part de la recerca fa referència a les conclusions i a la bibliografia, i la cinquena incorpora els annexos.

[eng] This doctoral thesis set itself the goal of providing a better geographical understanding of the relationship between a city and its river, based on the study of the historical and spatial evolution and transformation of urban-river spaces in four Catalan (Manlleu, Terrassa, Lleida and Sant Adrià de Besòs) and one French case study (the city of Lyon). The study is based on the hypothesis that the urban-river spaces corresponding to each case study have, over the last half century, undergone a major urban transformation that has led to their spatial reconfiguration, a change that can be explained on the basis of the historical projects drawn up as part of their urban planning process; the interpretation and implementation of these projects by the competent administrations; and, the influence of historical events linked to the river and urban environments, such as episodes of flooding. The thesis adopts a methodological approach based on the two phases that typify any exercise of geographical research. First, it undertakes a preliminary historical analysis of the urban planning, aimed at documenting, reviewing and interpreting the decisions and provisions of the urban planning policies drawn up at the local level in each of the case studies, within a clearly defined time frame (from the 1950s to the present day) and, in addition, it reports a series of in-depth interviews with technical experts working in this specific field. Second, it undertakes a cartographic analysis centred on the study of the changes in land use of the urban-river spaces in each of the cases studied, with the goal of comparing –using aerial digital orthoimages– two different points in time (1956 and 2012, in the case of the Catalan cities; and 1960 and 2011, in the case of Lyon). In terms of the overall structure, the thesis is made up of ten chapters, grouped into five parts that make up the main body of the study. The first part serves to present, formally and structurally, the theoretical and methodological framework adopted in the study. The second part comprises four chapters –one dedicated to each Catalan case study– composed of different sections providing a geographical contextualization of the settlement, an analysis of its urban planning history and a study of the changes in its land use. The third part of the thesis is given over entirely to the analysis of the French city of Lyon. Finally, the fourth part presents the conclusions that can be drawn from the studies and the bibliography, and the fifth includes the appendixes.
