Blood is thicker than water

Abstract

[cat] La relació que establim amb els espais familiars físics i simbòlics és diversa i crea interferències, dislocacions, irrupcions culturals que configuren la nostra memòria i la nostra identitat. Blood is thicker than water explora la relació amb la terra i la cultura dels nostres avantpassats a través de l’art. Partint d’aspectes autobiogràfics estableixo un diàleg crític amb el lloc d’origen del pare, l’illa de Mallorca. Reviso i qüestiono conceptes com els vincles de sang, l’illa, la infantesa com a paradís perdut, el sentiment de pertinença o forasteria respecte a allò que ens és suposadament proper i la construcció de la pròpia identitat. Una enciclopèdia heretada, dona pas a l’elaboració d’una cartografia personal de l’illa. Un mural de pàgines intervingudes amb dibuix, pintura i altres tècniques, extretes dels 10 volums de la Història de Mallorca de J.Mascaró Pasarius editada el 1971. L’espai arquetípic és reconquerit en ser representat amb la creació d’aquest gran palimpsest. A partir de la vivència personal digerida i regurgitada per l’artista, el vincle amb la terra dels avantpassats torna a l’esfera pública en forma d’instal·lació pictòrica.

[eng] We establish a multiple relationship with family spaces, both real and symbolic, creating interferences, dislocations, and cultural irruptions that configure our memory and identity. Blood is thicker than water explores through art the relationship with the land and culture of our ancestors. Using autobiographical elements, I engage in a critical dialogue with the birthplace of my father, the island of Mallorca. I examine and put into question notions as blood links, the island, childhood as a lost paradise, the feeling of belonging or estrangement towards what is allegedly close, and the building of our identity. An inherited encyclopaedia leads to composing a personal cartography of the island: a mural of pages taken from the 10 volumes of Historia de Mallorca by J. Mascaró Pasarius published in 1971- on which I draw, paint and use other artistic techniques. The archetypical space is reconquered with the creation of this great palimpsest. Once the artist’s personal experience is digested and regurgitated, the bond with the ancestor’s land goes back to the public sphere in the form of a pictorial installation.
