Abstract: [en] Pierre de Fermat developed a method to obtain maxima and minima of a given curve. His findings are known from his correspondance with Mersenne and Roberval among others. The analysis of his method allows us to conclude that Fermat approached to the concept of limits and he was a pioneer in writing a method to determinate maxima and minima from a geometric perspective.
