The fundamental concepts of the theory of level sets of real functions defined on an arbitrary set, with no topology, but only with a partial order structure, are exposed. Then we consider monotonic functions defined on subsets of the given set, and their possible extensions to larger sets which preserve monotonicity and have the optima! property that the oscillation of the function remains unchanged.ca
