[eng] The dilemma of vertical integration versus specialisation is central to industrial organization. This article focuses on the questíon in a very specific sector, place and time: the Catalan cotton industry in the mid-nineteenth century. From the ledgers and commercial correspondence of two firms, those of Muntadas and Batllori, we can see the relationship they established with both their suppliers and theír clients and why they tried to combine manufacturing wíth commercialisation. Both chose partial integration, i.e. they built up their own commercial networks but did not sell all their output through them, while the same networks were used for selling other manufacturers' goods. The balance between incentives of and limits to vertical integration led to this mixed solution, very representative of the Catalan industrial district. |
