| ca |
dc.description.abstract | [eng] This paper is a contribution to an ongoing case study about Álex, a 12-year-old autistic child who possesses an expandable trilingual (Spanish, Catalan, and English), mainly nominal lexicon, but who is unable to speak or understand any language. Despite him knowing thousands of nouns, in matters of communication he is like a non-verbal autist. Why can Álex neither understand nor produce sentences? Is it because of a lack of verbs or of grammar? To shed light on why Álex does not go beyond producing minimal phrases such as batido rosa (‘pink milkshake’) in an imperative fashion, three tests have been designed. The first test aims at verifying that Álex has the generative ability to understand binary merge expressing a modifier relation (batido rosa). The second test assesses the comprehension of binary merge with a verbal head (pájaro volando, comiendo pizza), and the third one that of syntactic objects with three terminals one or two of which are functional or grammatical, such as de in juguete de casa.
