Abstract: In this work we calculate the energy-momentum tensor of the electromagnetic field in vacuum and in the presence of an isotropic medium from first principles, along with the conservation laws for various cases. With the aid of Maxwell and the constitutive equations for isotropic media, we relate the canonical, Minkowski and Abraham energy-momentum tensors to each other and discuss the difference between Abraham and canonical momentum in an attempt to clarify the century-long Abraham-Minkowski controversy
