Abstract: | 'Proverbele românilor din România, Basarabia, Bucovina, Ungaria, Istria şi Macedonia' (1895-1903), by Iuliu A. Zanne (1855-1924), published in ten volumes, even today provides a reference framework in Romanian culture for collections of proverbs. Moreover, thanks to its corpus of ca. 47,330 sayings in Romanian (or Aromanian, Megleno-Romanian and Istro-Romanian) and the repeated references to equivalents in so many other languages, it has become a milestone in the study of proverbs in Europe. The aim of this study is twofold: first of all, to present, grosso modo, the general structure of Zanne's work and his articles, and, secondly, to analyse the connection he establishes between Romanian (in four cases, Aromanian) and Catalan proverbs, not forgetting the links the author points to with equivalent sayings in other languages. |
