[eng] For about a century, engineering careers have been organised –in most countries– with a cycle of basic sciences at the base, which includes Mathematics. Currently, doubts and dilemmas have arisen about whether or not this is the best option, so the mathematical training that engineers need nowadays is a problematic question. Regarding this problem, research on how mathematics is taught in basic science cycles in engineering is needed, particularly in Peru, due to the lack of research on this subject prior to the search for alternatives. In this line, this research aims to determine the criteria that guide the teacher’s practice in Peru to explain mathematics in a basic science course in engineering careers and, specifically, to explain the topic of derivatives. The theoretical framework that supports and justifies this research is the Onto-Semiotic Approach to mathematical knowledge and instruction, which provides a didactic analysis model (consisting of five types of analysis) that allows describing, explaining, and assessing the instructional processes that are designed and implemented by mathematics teachers. This is an interpretative research from a qualitative approach, consisting of both individual and multiple case study, which seeks to understand the teaching of mathematics through the analysis of teaching practices and the reflection on their practice. The participants of the research group are seven university professors, including mathematicians and mathematics teachers, who teach differential calculus in different engineering careers at public and private universities in Peru. For the analysis of the information (video-recorded lessons, syllables, lesson plans, teaching resources, etc.), the theoretical-methodological tools provided by the Onto-Semiotic Approach were used, particularly, the didactic suitability criteria, used as a priori categories to infer the criteria that guide the teachers’ practice. There criteria were triangulated with those that the teachers declared in a semi-structured interview, in which they had to discuss with the researcher on their teaching practice. The first result obtained is that the participants carry out a didactic trajectory in which the didactic configurations are located closer to the formalist magisterial configurations, than to other models (for instance, the realistic didactic configurations). This is consistent with the results of the previous literature on the teaching of mathematics in basic engineering cycles and, specifically, on the teaching of calculus at the first university grades, which show that a mechanistic, routine, and purely algorithmic teaching of formulas is still dominant, or a very rigorous and formalistic teaching, in such a way that the significant understanding of the concept of derivative and its immediate applications, which allow the future engineer to solve problems of their professional performance, are left aside. However, at the same time, practices such as taking into account previous knowledge, using new technologies, proposing a problem contextualised with the profession, etc., are observed. Although these didactic practices can be considered marginal in the teachers’ work, they would give rise to a possible change if the institution considers it. The second result about, the principles that guide teaching practice, mostly, inferred from the analysis of their lessons, is that –in general terms– the principles that have more weight are the ecological (in terms of program compliance), mediational (regarding the adjustment of the available time), epistemic (regarding the implementation of mainly procedural teaching), and cognitive principles (since a basically magisterial teaching model is adopted). In any case, these weights vary from one teacher to another. The third result, about the criteria that guide their practice according to the teachers, is that they mainly declare criteria that show more concern for students, as the cognitive and emotional criteria, or the use of problems related to their profession. Nevertheless, after the teachers’ interview, it is concluded that the fulfilment of the syllabus and the adaptation to the available time are emphasized; that is, they assign a high weight to the ecological and mediational suitability criteria, while they assign a medium weight to the interactional and emotional criteria, and a relatively low weight to the epistemic and cognitive criteria. These results, the criteria that guide the teaching practice, explain why basic science lessons are implemented in engineering careers in an expository and procedural way, and why innovations are not being added.
