dc.description.abstract[cat] La tesi doctoral "LA VILA DE BERGA A L'EDAT MITJANA.
dc.description.abstract[eng] The doctoral thesis "LA VILA DE BERGA A L'EDAT MITJANA. LA FAMÍLIA DELS BERGA" is composed of three volumes. In the first one, there is the worded of the thesis; the second one contains the documentary appendix and the third one includes the graphical appendix with pictures and maps. The main goal which this thesis pursues is the knowledge of Berga in the Early Middle Ages, from late 14th century since middle 15th one. As a secondary goal we find an approach to the study of the family called Berga, member of the Catalan rural nobility which lord over the village between 12th and 13th centuries. The documentation used as a base for this work has been basically extracted from Berga's Parochial Archive. Documentation from other archives as the Corona d'Aragó Archive, the Local Berguedà Archive and the Franciscans from Catalonia Archive has been also consulted. The more important aspects treated in this thesis are the study of the landscapes which surrounded the village, its urban structure, who its inhabitants were, how the everyday life was, how the families were structured, which paths lead to the village and which economic activities were carried out. The study of all these subjects has allowed us to make a picture of how was Berga in the period mentioned above: a royal village located in the Pre-Pyrenees, medium-sized, with narrow streets and few squares, peopled with a wide range of characters going from the rich merchants to the slaves through an important amount of people working in very different trades. The village was more or less well communicated with the outside by paths which linked it to the important cities like Barcelona and by a network of secondary paths which drove to the nearer populated villages. The main economic activity during the Early Middle Ages in Berga was the manufacture of woollen clothes and related to it we find a great number of weavers, dyers and tailors. The thesis ends in the middle of 15th century when Berga starts a long period of decline of which will not overcome until early 19th century with the replace of woollen for cotton.eng
