Abstract

[spa] En los años 40, Edwin H. Land revolucionaría el mundo de la fotografía, introduciendo en el mercado una película fotográfica capaz de revelar y fijar la imagen al cabo de pocos segundos, sin necesidad de recurrir a un laboratorio. El diseño de este tipo de película instantánea está compuesto por una compleja combinación, muy estudiada y equilibrada, de capas de tintes, emulsiones y reveladores que reaccionan de forma sincronizada para capturar la imagen, desarrollar la película, detener el proceso de desarrollo y neutralizar cualquier químico no utilizado. La evolución de la primera imagen instantánea, que se revelaba en tonos sepias hasta desarrollar la imagen a color, ha estado muy ligada a la fascinación científica del equipo que co-fundó Edwin H. Land en 1937, con el nombre de PolaroidTM. Este tipo de fotografía, a partir de los años 70, llego a ser en un fenómeno de masas por su simplicidad, multiplicando la práctica de la fotografía en el entorno doméstico y científico; convirtiéndose en un icono cultural, del que grandes artistas se dejaron seducir por completo. Lamentablemente, este tipo de imagen es muy frágil, tiene grandes problemas de inestabilidad y requiere de una estricta conservación preventiva para evitar la desaparición o destrucción de la imagen. El trabajo que se presenta a continuación es el resultado de una pequeña investigación teórico- práctica, esta última basada en la metodología científica, a través de la observación sistemática, mediciones, experimentación, análisis y elaboración de hipótesis sobre este tipo de fotografía en color, en particular de las películas SX70 y 600 de la marca comercial PolaroidTM Originals. Para entender en qué consiste esta tipología de imagen se ha realizado un recorrido histórico-técnico, analizando los materiales y procedimientos para la elaboración de la imagen, prestando un especial interés en los mecanismos de degradación y las posibles vías de conservación.

[eng] In the 1940s, Edwin H. Land would revolutionize the world of photography, introducing to the market a photographic film capable of developing and fixing the image after a few seconds, without the need to resort to a laboratory. The design of this type of instant film is composed of a complex, well studied and balanced combination of layers of dyes, emulsions, and developers that react in a synchronized manner to capture the image, develop the film, stop the development process and neutralize any unused chemicals. The evolution of the first snapshot image, which was developed in sepia tones until the color image was developed, has been closely linked to the scientific fascination of the team that co-founded Edwin H. Land in 1937 under the name of Polaroid™. This type of photography, from the 70s, became a mass phenomenon because of its simplicity, multiplying the practice of photography in the domestic and scientific environment; becoming a cultural icon, where great artists were seduced by this format. Unfortunately, this type of image is very fragile, has great problems of instability and requires strict preventive conservation to avoid the disappearance or destruction of the image. The current paper presented below is the result of a small theoretical and practical research, the latter based on scientific methodology, through systematic observation, measurements, experimentation, analysis and elaboration of hypotheses about this type of color photography, in particular of the SX70 and 600 films of the Polaroid™ Originals trademark. In order to understand what this type of image consists of, a historical-technical journey has been made, analyzing the materials and procedures for the elaboration of the image, paying special attention to the mechanisms of degradation and the possible ways of conservation.
