Twelve Years a Slave: Slavery through the Eyes of Solomon Northup and Steve McQueen

Abstract

The main aim and the motivation of this paper is to analyse and compare the novel Twelve Years a Slave (1853) with its film adaptation. For this purpose, several key characters and scenes have been chosen, as it was the clearest and most effective way to accomplish the aforementioned comparison. In addition, the work previously includes a short section where the reader is placed in context about when the novel was written and which events took place at the time. It also offers an analysis of the adaptation based on the reviews, both for and against, of several users of the IMDb platform. Finally, through an interview with a black woman, the paper explores the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement upon the seventh art during this last decade.

El objetivo principal y motivación de este trabajo es analizar y comparar la novela Doce Años de Esclavitud (1853) con su adaptación cinematográfica. Para ello, se han escogido varios personajes y escenas clave, ya que era la manera más clara y eficaz de llevar a cabo dicha comparación. Además, previamente, el trabajo consta de una pequeña sección donde se pone en contexto al lector sobre cuando fue escrita la novela y qué acontecimientos tuvieron lugar en aquella época. También incluye un análisis de la adaptación basado en las opiniones, tanto a favor como en contra, de varios usuarios de la plataforma IMDb. Por último, a través de una entrevista a una mujer negra, se explora el impacto del movimiento Black Lives Matter en el séptimo arte durante esta última década.
