‘You Have To Read This!’ A Not-So-Speculative Guide To Who-Writes-the-Blurb-And-Why

Abstract

Nowadays, the amount of fiction available in both television and the literary world is relentlessly competitive. In Netflix, algorithms constantly select new titles that flash at subscribers’ menus. A picture, a catchy title or a preview might be held responsible for a consumer pressing ‘play’. And when it comes to the novel, this power may rely on the blurb: a synopsis of the manuscript, a text on a text, which it inevitably establishes a dialogue with the piece it aims to describe. By analysing not only blurbs but the whole paratextual element in English fiction (including covers, praise notes and some other lawsuit regarding a publishing scandal), the following work provides a speculative - or not-so-much - guide on the reasons behind the writing of blurbs, the influence they inflict upon potential consumers – whether they include or exclude them – and on the roles of editor, publisher, author and reader, in an attempt to unveil the secrecy surrounding the publishing world. Who writes the blurb? Do other voices survive the editor’s red pencil?

Hoy en día, la cantidad de ficción disponible tanto en televisión como en el mundo literario es increíblemente competitiva. En Netflix, los algoritmos seleccionan continuamente nuevos títulos que aparecen en el menú de usuario. Una imagen, un título pegadizo o un tráiler pueden ser los responsables de que el consumidor le de al ‘play’. Y cuando se trata de una novela, ese poder puede recaer en la sinopsis: ese breve texto que acompaña al manuscrito, un texto sobre otro texto, que inevitablemente establece un diálogo con la obra que intenta describir. Analizando no sólo las sinopsis de ficción en lengua inglesa sino también su envoltorio paratextual (incluyendo cubiertas, citas favorables y alguna que otra demanda judicial en un escándalo editorial), el siguiente trabajo es una guía especulativa - o no tanto - sobre los motivos detrás de la redacción de la sinopsis, la influencia que puede llegar a ejercer sobre el consumidor potencial - incluyéndolo o excluyéndolo - y sobre los roles de editor, editorial, autor y lector, en un intento de despejar el halo de misterio que rodea el mundo editorial. ¿Quién escribe la sinopsis? ¿Sobreviven las otras voces al bolígrafo rojo del editor?
