Abstract

[eng] Ooh touch it move it use it baby explores the use of toilet paper as a material with which I examine my experience during the pandemic of Covid. This material was chosen for two main reasons, one, during Covid the value assigned to toilet paper drastically shifted. Going from a cheap, quotidian object to one that was sought after due to its scarcity. And two, it’s an object with inherent humor. However, during this project, this item evolved alongside the pandemic, and in a reflection of those occurrences, I began to loosen my strict thematic control on the material, and allowed the toilet paper to evolve into a tool, and a unique object unto itself. Until eventually, the project became an exploration of how I could transform the material, abstracting it without loosing it, while using humor to elevate the perception of toilet paper. The title is suggestive, evocative, while also being the actions that we do with toilet paper — an abstraction of language to demonstrate the duality inherent in this work.

[spa] Ooh touch it, move it, use it baby explora el uso del papel higiénico como material con el que examino mi experiencia durante la pandemia de Covid. Este material fue elegido por dos razones principales: en primer lugar, porque durante el Covid el valor asignado al papel higiénico cambió drásticamente. Pasó de ser un objeto barato y cotidiano a uno codiciado por su escasez. Y, en segundo lugar, porque es un objeto que destila humor inherente. Sin embargo, mientras se desarrollaba este proyecto, este artículo evolucionó como la pandemia, y en un reflejo de aquellos sucesos, comencé a aflojar mi estricto control temático sobre el material, y permití que el papel higiénico se convirtiera en una herramienta y un objeto de arte único en sí mismo. Finalmente, el proyecto se convirtió en una exploración de cómo podía transformarse dicho material, abstrayéndolo, sin perderlo, mientras se usa el humor para elevar la percepción que tenemos sobre el papel higiénico. El título es sugerente, evocador, pero también las acciones que hacemos con papel higiénico —una abstracción del lenguaje para demostrar la dualidad inherente que contiene esta obra.
