¿Com cuidar en temps ateus? La interpel·lació de l’altre en Butler i Levinas

Abstract

[cat] La investigació parteix del repte de pensar-nos deixant enrere l’ideal modern de sobirania i independència propi de l’individu autònom. Aquest exercici implica dos gestos: per una banda, familiaritzar-nos amb la condició vulnerable, interdependent o precària que han explicitat les successives crítiques a la modernitat; i, per altra, resistir-nos a condemnar la nostra agència a la incomunicació i el relativisme. En especial, volíem preguntar-nos per les possibilitats de la solidaritat com a resposta davant de l’altre que pateix.

Havent constat que el repte anterior no equival a un problema local, sinó que és molt viu en el pensament ètico-polític contemporani, recorrem a dos autors que es fan càrrec del mateix problema des d’influències i inquietuds prou diferent: Emmanuel Levinas i Judith Butler. No partim del no-res, sinó que aprofitem el diàleg que la darrera estableix amb el primer, especialment fructífer en les últimes dècades de la reva reflexió. Ambdós pensen la responsabilitat des de l’assumpció de la vulnerabilitat i, de fet, possibilitada per ella: responem perquè l’altre ens afecta tant si ho volem com si no. Aquesta idea de base ens permet posar- los en relació a través del concepte clau de la interpel·lació de l’altre. Al voltant d’aquesta idea, explorem el pensament de cadascun d’ells, tot i que, en el cas de Butler, ens limitem als punts de trobada o de possible relació amb Levinas. Com no pot ser d’una altra manera, explicitem els les friccions entre les seves propostes, com ara el paper de la interdependència i les mediacions en la trobada ètica amb l’altre. I, alhora, assagem una lectura complementària que ens permeti partir del plantejament ètic levinassià i sumar-hi els desenvolupaments polítics de Butler, aprofitant, al nostre entendre, el millor de l’un i de l’altre.

[eng] This research begins with the challenge of thinking about leaving behind the modern ideal of sovereignty, as well as the independence of the autonomous individual. This exercise is twofold: on the one hand, it compels us to familiarize ourselves with the vulnerable, interdependent, or precarious condition that has been made explicit by successive criticisms of modernity. And, on the other hand, to resist condemning our agency to relativism and lack of communication, especially exploring the possibilities of solidarity as a response to the suffering of others.

Having noted that the previous challenge is not a local problem but is very present in contemporary ethical-political thought, we turn to two authors who approach the same problem from different influences and concerns: Emmanuel Levinas and Judith Butler. We build on the dialogue that the latter establishes with the former, which was particularly fruitful in the last decades of her reflection. Both conceive responsibility as having its basis in vulnerability and in fact, made possible by it: we respond because the other affects us whether we want it or not. This basic idea allows us to relate the two thinkers through the key concept of the interpellation of the other, although, in the case of Butler, we limit ourselves to the points of encounter or possible relationship with Levinas. As it cannot be otherwise, we explain the frictions between their proposals, such as the role of interdependence and mediations in the ethical encounter with the other. And, at the same time, we attempt a complementary interpretation allowing us to start from Levinas’s ethical approach and add to it Butler's political developments, which assembles, in our opinion, the best of both.
