[EN] The Empordà endemism Silene sennenii is a singular species, now in danger of extinction caused mainly by the progressive disappearance of its habitat. In recent years, interest for its conservation has grown, resulting in several scientific studies which aim to improve the knowledge of this plant and propose measures and mechanisms to improve its state of conservation and to guarantee its survival. This study summarises the principal results of scientific research on Silene sennenii. Among others, its genetic diversity has been studied, showing the effects of population fragmentation as well as its reproductive biology. The latter reveals that Silene sennenii has an interesting method of nocturnal pollination. Decisive protective measures of its habitat are necessary for the conservation of this endemism, in order to maintain existing populations and, ideally, to enhance its expansion. |
