With certainty, the Christians employed too these expressions since they frequented the shows hke their heathen fellow citizens. Although, it would have been surprising to find these words in the churchmen's writings, they appeared frequently. The cause would be found in the playfiíl metaphors that Paul included in his epistles and in the influence that these metaphors had in later authors -who also used them to improve the communication with their parishioners-. The more common images are the palm and the crown, wich are given as a prize to the «God's athlete». Moreover, this simbolism was also integrated in tíie Christian iconography of the period. |
