Abstract: Gout is a chronic, metabolic, and inflammatory disease, strongly related to high concentrations of serum uric acid. It is characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joint, which provokes an inflammatory process, and that is why it is characterized as a type of arthritis. Despite it being a well-known disease and several drugs being available for its treatment, evidence has shown that the diet plays an important role in gout management. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine if proper diet control is as effective as the pharmacological treatment for disease management. For this study, bibliographical research has been conducted using the main scientific databases, where the most recent and relevant articles have been selected. The research has provided information on gout basis and its causes, the actual pharmacological treatment, and what impact the diet can have on the disease. Also, a short interview with a patient has been carried out and compared to the research. Overall, this study concludes that proper diet control has a similar impact in comparison to the pharmacological treatment for gout management, especially in hyperuricemia reduction.
