Abstract

In recent years, a debate has emerged strongly about the architectural and archaeological identification of the first monastic spaces in Catalonia, those that the late antique literary sources begin to mention from the Late Roman Empire (4th and 5th centuries), and to describe and to locate topographically —although always indirectly and very generically— from the Visigothic period (6th‑7th centuries). Certainly, knowing which, where and what these first monasteries were like is one of the great challenges posed by the archaeology of early Christianity in our country.
