Abstract: | King Martin the Human's policy on university education focuses especially on founding Barcelona General School of Medicine in 1401. Two aspects motivated the city's strong opposition to this foundation, the interest showed by doctors who already practised medicine there and the wish to maintain the monopoly of high education the city had hold up to that moment. The King's strong will came to fruition and the General School of Medicine and Arts was then consolidated. It was the embryonic stage of Barcelona University, which was founded by Alfonso el Magnánimo in 1450. |
