[eng] In the following essay we propose to make a study of how Sister, the narrator of Sarah Hall's The Carhullan Army (2007), constructs the discourse. The dystopian genre of the novel helps us understand the fictional context in which the protagonist's story unfolds. The story is told from the present, using testimony rhetoric to present the facts. Sister is locked in a cell, recounting its past, from a present which also influences her story. We also suggest studying the text from the concept of the narratee and the narrative authority, to understand how the listener of the speech can make it change. Furthermore, we use the concept of implied authorship to understand how Hall constructs Sister's discourse to conceal her presence in the text. Through the dissertation, we ask ourselves whether Sister is a trustworthy narrator, what make us doubt her, and what corroborates her authority. |
