Resum
The rank conjecture states that if a group $G = (\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z})^r$ acts freely and cellularly on $X$, a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the product of $k$ spheres, then $r \leq k$. Our focus is to study Browder’s 1983 partial proof of this conjecture in the case where all the spheres have the same dimension and the action of $G$ is trivial on the homology of $X$. In order to do so, we study group homology and cohomology and Tate cohomology since Browder’s proof uses the Tate cohomology to find a relation between the order of a group and its group cohomology which proves this specific case of the rank conjecture. Along the way we also prove the rank conjecture for the case where $G$ acts only on one sphere.
