Abstract

In this work we study the dynamics of magnetic rods in viscous media under rotating magnetic fields. We analyze the rotation dynamics of a paramagnetic and a ferromagnetic rods under rotating fields with circular and elliptical polarization in the bulk of a viscous liquid using the slim-body approximation. We also simulate the same setup using molecular dynamics simulations and validate the results for the paramagnetic rod in the bulk. Since we recover the theoretical behaviour we simulate the dynamics of the paramagnetic rod in presence of a wall. We then confirm that under elliptically polarized rotating fields the paramagnetic microrod can act as a toggleable microswimmer.
