Abstract
Multisensory stimulation is one of the non pharmacological therapies recommended for people with neurocognitive disorders, especially those with severe deterioration. Its therapheutics benefits are highlighted at the level of social interaction and implication with the environment, in the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), with evidence of positive effects in apathy and agitation, as well as in the promotion of relaxation from its role of entertainment/leisure. The present investigation aims to apply a multisensory stimulation intervention in elderly people home residents with moderate and severe neurocognitive disorders, to evaluate their effectiveness in functional, cognitive and behavioral areas. The intervention was developed in twelve sessions, both at the group level and at the individual level, with a total sample of seven elderly people from a residence in the city of Barcelona. A mild nonsignificant decrease in BPSD was identified, the irritability was the behavioral symptom that achieved greatest effect. There was no significant evidence of changes at the level functionality, cognitive performance, and depressive symptoms.
