La indústria cotonera catalana a començaments del segle XX

Abstract

[cat] Malgrat les nombroses i excel·lents contribucions dels especialistes a l'estudi de la indústria cotonera catalana, tradicionalment a partir d'un punt de vista sectorial i sobretot darrerament amb monografies d'empresa, encara subsisteixen algunes llacunes. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és aportar elements per aclarir alguns aspectes obscurs deguts especialment a problemes de fonts. Adoptant una perspectiva sectorial. Situant el cas en el seu context europeu i mundial, el treball aporta evidència a apreciacions sobre la indústria cotonera catalana de començaments del segle xx, tot matisant-ne algunes. En concret, l'elaboració d'una base de dades i el seu tractament ha permès establir una mostra significativa de l'esmentada indústria. La seva anàlisi ha portat a constatar una forta localització i una elevada integració, alhora que ha posat de relleu un grau d'atomització inferior al que molt sovint se li atribueix al sector.

[eng] There are many excellent studies of the cotton industry in Catalonia. Traditionally the subject has been approached from a sectoral perspective, and recently many studies of particular companies have been published. Nonetheless, a number of gaps in our knowledge are still in evidence today. The aim of this paper is to shed light on some of the aspects that are less well known, particularly due to a lack of appropriate sources. This study adopts a sectoral perspective and situates the case in the context of Europe and the world as a whole, providing evidence in support of certain appreciations on the cotton industry in Catalonia of the early twentieth centuiy and reformulating some of them. Specifically, the compilation and use of a database provides information on a significant cross-section of the industry. Its analysis points to high levels of localisation and integration, and suggests that the degree of atomisation was actually lower than is often believed.
