[spa] El estudio de los procesos de poblamiento, articulación del territorio y organización social del espacio en la alta edad media es un tema muy complejo que requiere de una gestión integrada de las fuentes arqueológicas y documentales y que necesariamente debe ser analizado desde una óptica regional, dada la realidad heterogénea del territorio peninsular y el impacto desigual de los procesos de romanización y posterior cristianización. Este trabajo pretende centrar el foco de atención en un área claramente delimitada, el Alto Arlanza, y en la problemática interpretativa que de ella se deriva a partir del análisis de algunos enclaves de reducidas dimensiones tradicionalmente identificados como eremitorios. Las características de estos centros, su proximidad y relación con otros asentamientos mayores de la zona, así como los paralelos existentes en otrasregiones del tercio norte peninsular nos sugieren algunas hipótesis de trabajo nuevas que presentamos de forma preliminar en este artículo. Con ellas pretendemos suscitar la reflexión y contribuir al esclarecimiento del periodo de transición -aún hoy poco conocido- entre el mundo antiguo y el feudal.
[eng] The study of peopling processes, landscape articulation and social organization during the Early Middle Ages is a complex issue. The Iberian Peninsula presents a heterogeneous landscape and the processes of Romanization and Christianization have had different degrees of impact throughout the territory. Therefore, the historical approach requires integrated management of written and material sources and needs to be analysed from a local standpoint. This piece of research focuses on a clearly delimited area, the Upper Arlanza basin, along with the interpretation problems arising from the study of some minor archaeological sites, identified in the past as hermitages. This paper preliminarily introduces some new working hypotheses suggested by the main features of these sites, their closeness and relation to other major settlements in the area, and the existing parallels in other areas in the north of Spain. As a result, our aim is to stimulate scientific debate and contribute to throwing light on the transition period, still rather unknown, between the ancient and feudal worlds.
