Abstract
[eng] During the Liberal Triennium (1820- 1823), the more revolutionary Liberals conceived and spread constitutional projects more radical than the Constitution of 1812. They were thus taking on board the ideas of Neapolitan constitutionalism brought over to Spain by Italian Liberal exiles. The failure of the counter-revolutionary coup of July 1822 caused a change of government, which encouraged Exaltado readings of the Constitution of 1812 and put a stop to any attempts at constitutional reform, whether in a Moderate or an Exaltado direction. The constitutional dogmatism of the new government pushed the more Exaltado among the Liberals into bringing into their interpretation of the Constitution the most radical concepts of the Neapolitan constitutional tradition: democracy, dictatorship, and a very restricted political role for the king.
