Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease is a severe neurodegenerative disorder that affects approximately 5% of the European population, a percentage that increases substantially among the elderly. It is also the leading cause of dementia in older adults, accounting for more than 60% of cases.
Moreover, it affects not only the individual suffering from the disease but also the patient’s environment—family, friends, and acquaintances—resulting in a significant economic burden. For these reasons, Alzheimer’s disease represents a major public health issue, which becomes even more evident considering the ageing of the population.
