Factores que afectan la motivación de los adolescentes en la clase de ELE

Abstract

La motivación es uno de los elementos fundamentales que debe poseer un individuo para aprender una lengua extranjera. Es un proceso que va cambiando a través del tiempo y que va nutriéndose de aspectos tanto internos (las emociones y pensamientos), como externos (el aula, otros compañeros, el profesor y las políticas de cada centro). Como docentes, es importante conocer qué factores influyen en la motivación de nuestros alumnos y cómo podemos establecer estrategias que nos ayuden a fortalecer su motivación. Partiendo de lo anterior, este trabajo explora las influencias que tienen los elementos del aula en la motivación de los adolescentes. Para esta investigación se realizaron dos entrevistas siguiendo el formato de los grupos focales con veintidós estudiantes de séptimo grado entre las edades de 12-13 años en la ciudad de Filadelfia, Estados Unidos. Los resultados muestran que entre los factores que afectan positivamente la motivación se encuentra la gestión del profesor y su planificación de las clases; mientras que como factores negativos se identifican el estudio de la gramática, la poca exposición a la lengua meta y la ausencia de una división por niveles lingüísticos.

Motivation is one of the fundamental elements that an individual must have to learn a foreign language. It is a process that changes over time and is nourished by both internal aspects (emotions and thoughts) and external elements (the classroom, other colleagues, the teacher and the methods of the center). As teachers, it is essential to know which factors influence the motivation of our students, and how we can establish strategies that help us to strengthen their motivation. Based on the above, this study explores the influences that the elements of the classroom have on the motivation of adolescents. For this research, two interviews were conducted following the format of the focus groups with twenty-two students from seventh grade, between the ages of 12-13 years in the city of Philadelphia, United States. The results show that among the favorable factors are the teacher's management in the classroom and their class planning; while the negative factors are the study of grammar, the low exposure to the target language and the absence of a division by linguistic levels.
