Abstract
This book studies the emergence of new patterns of organization and management
of new modern large hospitals in the world a century ago, between the 1880s and the
1930s. History never repeats itself, but there were three major events that interacted and
influenced each other at that time, and that are once more having important consequences in our lives today. First, a technological and scientific revolution in the health industries which radically changed the methods of diagnosis and therapy for the sick, with enduring innovations taking place in Medicine, Biology, Pharmacy and sanitary equipment.
Second, world migrations moving millions of people from one continent to another and
from the countryside to cities. And third, weak health care policies unable to respond fast
enough to a worldwide pandemic. A century old it was the Spanish flu; today it is
COVID19.
