Estudio sobre actitudes lingüísticas, respecto del español, de una comunidad hispana: El caso del suroeste de Pittsburgh, Pensilvania

Abstract

Este trabajo de investigación es un estudio de caso para conocer las actitudes lingüísticas, respecto del español, de una comunidad hispana de clase media en el suroeste de Pittsburgh. En el estudio se entrevistó a doce personas sobre su relación con la lengua española y la cultura hispana, en diferentes aspectos de su vida: en lo familiar, en lo laboral, en lo social y a nivel escolar; así como su percepción de la actitud externa hacia la lengua española en un área con una población hispana muy reducida. El estudio reveló datos interesantes sobre la transmisión intergeneracional de la lengua, sobre el valor afectivo hacia ella, sobre la motivación para mantenerla y mejorar su dominio, sobre los contextos de uso del español y sobre los beneficios e inconvenientes de ser bilingüe e hispano en esta región de los Estados Unidos de América.

This research is a case study to learn about a Hispanic middle-class community’s attitude towards the Spanish language. The community resides in the South West region of Pittsburgh, PA. For the study, twelve people were interviewed about their relationship with the Spanish language and the Hispanic culture in different aspects of their life: family, work, social life, and education. Including their perception of the external attitude towards the Spanish language in an area with a reduced Hispanic population. The study revealed interesting data about the intergenerational transmission of the language, the affective value towards it, the motivation to keep it and improve their language abilities, the contexts in which Spanish can be used and about the benefits and inconveniences of being bilingual and Hispanic in this region of the United States of America.
