[eng] This paper describes the evolution of proto-historic urbanism in the central Catalan coastal region from the Late Bronze Age to the time of Roman conquest. The first proto-urban settlements appear during the VIIth. century BC in southern Catalonia; in general, they are small sites, located on the top of hills with steep slopes; their interna1 structure is based on one longitudinal street, with houses aligned on one or both sides. As an exception, the settlement of Barranc de Ghfols has several streets, which form a nearly orthogonal grid. During the Iberian period proto-urban settlements were established throghout Catalonia. Several areas show a clear hierarchy of settlements, which ranges from large fortified sites of a properly urban character (of up to 10 ha in surface) to very small agricultura1 nuclei scattered on the lowlands, with other medium size towns (from 0,l to 2 ha) in between. The internal organization of settlements is strongly dependant on size and topography. As a result there are different models: the largest sites are generally on hillsides and organized on terraces, whereas the medium settlements tend to occupy the top of conical hills, protected by a surrounding wall.
