Abstract

[cat] Aquest treball té conferida la missió de demostrar i testimoniar la rellevància artisticocultural d’Apel·les Mestres com a il·lustrador de llibres dins el panorama literari de la segona meitat del segle XIX i del primer decenni del segle XX, tot analitzant la correspondència que el gran geni Mestres i l’escriptor Benito Pérez Galdós varen mantenir al llarg de més de dues dècades d’amistat i tracte professional. A través de les cartes estudiades, Mestres es manifesta com un forjador d’imatges privilegiat que, per mitjà dels seus dibuixos, és capaç d’atorgar l’alè de la vida als textos novel·lístics de Galdós. Immers en un món industrialitzat, en què els avenços tecnològics i un grau més elevat d’exigència educativa per part del públic han fet possible que la premsa i les editorials assumeixin una concepció més productiva i consumista de la cultura i, al mateix temps, en què els intel·lectuals descobreixen que el llenguatge per si sol ja no és suficient per expressar la complexitat de la natura humana i del funcionament de la societat, Mestres esdevé un orfebre d’imatges dotades del poder de transformar la ficció en realitat.

[eng] This work has been given the mission of demonstrating and testifying to the artistic and cultural relevance of Apel·les Mestres as a book illustrator in the literary scene of the second half of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century, analyzing the correspondence that the great genius Mestres and the writer Benito Pérez Galdós maintained throughout more than two decades of friendship and professional treatment. Through the letters studied, Mestres manifests himself as a privileged forger of images who, through his drawings, is able to give the breath of life to Galdós’s novel texts. Immersed in an industrialized world, in which technological advances and a higher degree of educational demand on the part of the public have made it possible for the press and publishers to assume a more productive and consumerist conception of culture and, at the same time, in what intellectuals discover that language alone is no longer enough to express the complexity of human nature and the functioning of society, Mestres becomes a goldsmith of images endowed with the power to transform fiction into reality.
