Abstract
[eng] This paper analyses the path followed by the firm Fabricación de Automóviles Sociedad Anónima from its foundation in 1951 until 1964-65, when it became Fabricación de Automóviles Renault de España S.A. During this period, the firm, from being a simple automobile assembler, became a real automobile manufacturer. The success of FASA must be seen within the context of the Spanish automobile industry's take off during the 1950s and 1960s. The article examines to what extent the development of FASA was possible thanks to the adoption of strategic industrial policies by the Spanish Government and concludes that active protectionist policies played a significant rôle in at least three important moments in the company's life.
