Este artículo examina el papel del municipalismo español en el proceso de integración europea entre 1977 y 1998. Durante este período, que abarca la transición democrática, la adhesión a la CEE (1986) y los desarrollos institucionales del Tratado de Maastricht y del de Ámsterdam, las ciudades españolas lucharon por su reconocimiento en la arquitectura europea. Aunque el proceso de integración estuvo dominado por los estados, el municipalismo español participó activamente en redes de ciudades y promovió la autonomía local y el principio de subsidiariedad. A través del modelo de la “Europa de las Ciudades”, los dirigentes locales defendieron una mayor proximidad entre las instituciones europeas y la ciudadanía. Asimismo, este texto analiza el impacto del europeísmo municipalista en la consolidación democrática de España en las décadas de 1970, 1980 y 1990.
This article examines the role of Spanish municipalism in the European integration process between 1977 and 1998. During this period, which includes the democratic transition, Spain’s accession to the EEC (1986), and the institutional developments of the Maastricht and Amsterdam Treaties, Spanish cities fought for recognition within the European framework. Although the integration process was dominated by nation-states, the Spanish municipalist movement was actively engaged in city networks, promoting local autonomy and the principle of subsidiarity. Invoking the “Europe of Cities” model, local leaders advocated greater proximity between European institutions and citizens. Additionally, the article analyses the impact of municipalist Europeanism on Spain’s democratic consolidation between the 1970s and 1990s
