Methods for psychoacoustic and emotional evaluation of archaeological soundscapes with auralisation
(Oxbow Books, 2024-10) López-Mochales, Samantha; Escera i Micó, Carles
In this chapter, the most cutting-edge approaches in psychoacoustics used in archaeology are critically examined, with an emphasis on the study of rock art locations. The capturing of reverberation with a measured impulse response is presented as a crucial methodology for recording the acoustic properties of rock art sites, extracting numerical parameters and conducting statistical analyses, and performing auralisations. In archaeology, auralisation has numerous uses, including the study of psychoacoustics and the preservation of acoustic heritage. Regarding psychoacoustics, several behavioural scales used in the research about the perception and emotional responses to soundscapes are discussed, along with the studies that implement them. The need for the creation of new instruments specific for the recently born field of psychoarchaeoacoustics is debated, as well as the best strategies to overcome cultural biases that studying the sound of the past in the present inevitably entails.

Methodologies to explore the cognitive effects of music in rituals: Implications for studying ancient ritual activities
(Oxbow Books, 2024-10) Aparicio-Terrés, Raquel; Escera i Micó, Carles
Music is present in all human societies and has long been related to rituals. Our definition of ritual follows Nicholas M. Hobson and includes predetermined behavioural sequences that are rigid, formal and repetitive, with elements that have no clear instrumental purpose and are part of a broader system of symbolism and meaning. There are sacred and not sacred rituals. Despite the connection between ritual and music, the examination of music in ritual contexts has been neglected in most scientific disciplines related to neuroscience and psychology. In this article, we review studies on the cognitive effects of present-day ritualistic music. By emphasising the methodological characteristics of these studies, we propose several considerations for future scientific investigations on the topic. Specifically, we observe that the function of music in modern rituals may be reduced to modulating emotions during the event and/or inducing alterations in the participants’ mental states. Based on this observation, we suggest a series of target cognitive and physiological measures to lead future research on the subject. Also, we suggest ways in which brain activity can be measured and analysed in response to different ritualistic musical stimuli. We argue that exploring how music in present-day ritualistic contexts affects brain activity, cognition, behaviour, and physiology will deepen our understanding of ancient ritual activity.

    Personal constructs in systemic practice
    (1995) Feixas i Viaplana, Guillem
This paper intends to elaborate the relationship between Kelly's Personal Construct Theory (PCT) and the systemic therapies beyond their notable similarities. Kelly's constructive alternativism is situated in the context of the current constructivist orientation that the family therapy movement seems to be adopting. A model of change is presented based on PCT's experience cycle. From this cycle, the relationship between behaviors and constructions is elaborated incorporating Procter's (52, 53) notions of the Family Construct System (FCS) and position. This model allows for interventions both at behavioral and construction levels, as well as allowing for a certain technical eclecticism while, at the same time, retaining a strong theoretical coherence. This approach is discussed in the context of the debate about strategizing, power, and control held by authors such as Golann, Hoffman, and Tomm. Finally, some implications for research are outlined.

Los constructos personales en la práctica sistémica
    (1998) Feixas i Viaplana, Guillem

(Paidós, 1996) Feixas i Viaplana, Guillem; Cornejo Álvarez, José Manuel

Resolution of dilemmas by personal construct psychotherapy
(Wiley, 2005) Feixas i Viaplana, Guillem; Saúl Gutiérrez, Luis Ángel
Like other constructivist approaches, Personal Construct Theory (PCT) views human activity as a meaning creating process. What human organisms do, is informed by the way they construe events, and in turn assign meaning to those events. Symptoms are a rare, but legitimate part of their activity. They challenge our everyday conceptions regarding human behaviour. From a personal construct perspective, however, they are not an exception to the laws of behaviour, or, an error of nature but activities embedded in a meaning making process.
