- Part del llibreExploring aurophilic interactions in P,C–Au(I)–Y complexes: Pathways to supramolecular aggregation(Elsevier, 2024-08-20) Frontera, Antonio; Rodríguez Raurell, LauraIn this chapter we provide an extensive overview of Au’s inclination to form supramolecular assemblies through the establishment of Au···Au contacts, mainly in the solid state. We have focused on P–Au–Y and C–Au–Y configurations (where Y is O, N, S, P, or a halogen atom) based on the expertize of our research groups. We first assess the natural tendency of linear Au(I) complexes to aggregate, supported by statistical evidence. The following sections are dedicated to analyzing the supramolecular structures resulting from P–Au–Y and C–Au–Y configurations, breaking down the analysis according to the specific Y atom. It should be noted that our approach is targeted, selecting instances that either highlight exceptional supramolecular structures or provide valuable insights through comparisons among different substituents or ligands. We have contemplated extending our findings to those reported in the literature by experts in the field. This would allow us to present a more comprehensive and expansive overview of our research.

Alloying Effect in Low Loaded Rh Catalysts Supported on High Surface Area Alumina on Their Activity in CH4 and NO Decomposition(IntechOpen, 2012-02-01) Da Costa, Patrick; Dutkiewicz, Jarosław; Choque, Valerio; Homs Martí, Narcís; Kornelak, Paweł; Mieczysława, Najbar; Pietraszek, Agnieszk; Ramírez de la Piscina, Pilar; Sobczak, JanuszIn the alloys of transition metals (TM) and main group ones (MGM) the valence electrons from MGM can fill the d band of the TMs entirely and slightly increase the number of electrons in their s band (Azaroff, 1960; Kittel, 2005). Such Rh atoms enriched in electrons, present in Al-Rh alloys, were found to be very active electron donors (Pietraszek et al., 2007). It was revealed that they transfer the electrons to the antibonding Л orbital of adsorbed nitric oxide molecules causing NO decomposition to dinitrogen and dioxygen (Pietraszek et al., 2007). Due to the great difference in the Al and Rh electro-negativity, the alloys are sometimes considered as nonstoichiometric chemical compounds. Because of the large range of nonstoichiometry those compounds should rather be estimated as intermediate phases (IP) (Azaroff, 1960). The presence of the Al-Rh alloy nanocrystallites isostructural with Al9Rh2 (Bostrom et al., 2005) was earlier revealed in the freshly prepared Rh/δAl2O3 catalysts containing 0.06 and 1.5 wt.% Rh (Pietraszek et al., 2007; Zimowska et al., 2006)...Part del llibre
Polysiloxane Side-Chain Azobenzene-Containing Liquid Single Crystal Elastomers for Photo-Active Artificial(IntechOpen, 2012-09-12) Garcia Amorós, Jaume; Velasco Castrillo, DoloresLiquid crystals (LCs) are unique materials with amazing properties and uses. Since their discovery in 1889 by F. Reinitzer1, they have experienced an explosive growth because of their successful application in a wide variety of areas such as information displays2, cosmetics and health care3, thermography4-5, artificial muscle-like actuators6-7 and enantioselective synthesis8, among others. Thus, liquid crystals play an important role in modern technology and they are present in the most common devices used in our daily live. Research into this field is growing day by day and new promising applications for such materials are discovered and developed continuously...Llibre
New strategies in the modulation of fatty acid oxidation as a treatment for obesity(Transworld Research Network, 2013) Herrero Rodríguez, Laura; Mera Nanín, Paula; Orellana Gavaldà, Josep Maria; Gurunathan, Chandrashekaran; Malandrino, Maria Ida; Mir Bonnín, Joan Francesc; Makowski, Kamil; Pozo, Macarena; Arasa, Maria del Mar; Ariza Piquer, Xavier; Asins Muñoz, Guillermina; García Gómez, Jordi; García Hegardt, Fausto; Serra i Cucurull, DolorsStrategies that enhance fat degradation or reduce caloric food intake could be considered therapeutic interventions to reduce not only obesity, but also its associated disorders. The enzyme carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1) is the critical rate-determining regulator of fatty acid oxidation (FAO) and might play a key role in increasing energy expenditure and controlling food intake. Our group has shown that mice overexpressing CPT1 in liver are protected from weight gain, the development of obesity and insulin resistance. Regarding food intake control, we observed that the pharmacological inhibition of CPT1 in rat hypothalamus decreased food intake and body weight. This suggests that modulation of CPT1 activity and the oxidation of fatty acids in various tissues can be crucial for the potential treatment of obesity and associated pathologies.Llibre

Membrane interaction of polymyxin B and synthetic analogues studied in biomimetic systems: implications for antibacterial action(Transworld Research Network, 2013) Grau Campistany, Ariadna; Rabanal Anglada, Francesc; Pujol Cubells, Montserrat; Cajal Visa, YolandaMembrane-active antimicrobial peptides, such as polymyxin B (PxB), are currently in the spotlight as potential candidates to overcome bacterial resistance. We have designed synthetic analogs of PxB in order to determine the structural requirements for membrane action. Since the mechanism of action of PxB involves interaction with both the outer membrane and the cytoplasmic membrane of Gram negative bacteria, we have used an approach based on mimicking the outer layers of these membranes using monolayers, Langmuir-Blodgett films and unilamelar vesicles, and applying a battery of biophysical methods in order to dissect the different events of membrane interaction. Collectively, results indicate that the PxB analogues act in the bacterial membrane by the same mechanism than PxB, and that cationic amphipathicity determines peptide activity.Llibre

Cryptosporidium sp. in public swimming pools in Barcelona(Transworld Research Network, 2011) Gómez López, María Soledad; Gracenea Zugarramurdi, Mercedes; Ángel Ripoll, Laia; Beneyto, VicençThe presence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in swimming pools in Barcelona was studied. The possible influence of the different parameters related to water conditions, pool structure and users has also been analyzed. Cryptosporidium oocysts were detected in 54% of the swimming pools analyzed and in 85% of the sport centers checked. Oocysts concentrations ranged from 0 to 30 oocysts/L. Among parameters related to water conditions, there was no relationship between oocyst presence and water pH, but the influence of temperature was statistically significant (p"MENOR QUE"0.05) (¿2=0.024). Among parameters related to pool structure, the filter backwash water samples revealed a higher percentage of parasitation (58.8%) than the prefilter ones (42.9%). With the medium volume pools (100-500 m3), the percentage was higher (80%). Covered and uncovered pools presented similar prevalences for Cryptosporidium oocysts. Looking at two of the user related parameters, swimming pools with more users and children's swimming pools showed
