    National accounts and macroeconomic indicators
(Edward Elgar, 2023) Roca Jusmet, Jordi
This entry focuses on macroeconomic indicators to highlight their problems both in their descriptive use and in their frequent normative use. GDP only registers activities involving monetary transactions. For the calculation of GDP there is no estimate of the welfare obtained from ”goods and services”. Another criticism of the use of per capita GDP or per capita National Income as indicators of economic welfare is that they do not consider income distribution. Moreover, they tell us nothing about the environmental impacts caused by production and consumption activities and when environmental problems and risks generate economic costs, these costs can increase GDP and NI. Moreover, the depletion of natural resources is not considered in the calculation of net macroeconomic indicators. The conclusion is that the criticisms of GDP (and NI) are so many and so important that their use as indicators of economic and social success should be completely abolished.

Conventional climate change economics: a way to define the optimal policy?
(Springer, Cham, 2023) Roca Jusmet, Jordi; Padilla Rosa, Emilio
The application of cost–benefit logic to climate change has been popularized as “the economics of climate change.” The Dynamic Integrated Climate-Economy (DICE) model of William Nordhaus, which models the interrelations between the economy and climate change and indicates the “optimal” path of emission mitigation, recommends moderate action to limit warming to 3.5 °C. This is in contrast to a recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which urges to limit it to 1.5 °C. The analyses à la Nordhaus contain several questionable assumptions, choices of methods, and parameters that are based on the value judgments of the authors, and these determine their results. The economic analysis of climate change policies should incorporate the precautionary principle and a concern for sustainability and environmental justice.

Private rented markets in Spain and housing affordability
(Bristol, UK: Policy Press, 2023-10-18) Pareja Eastaway, Montserrat; Sánchez-Martínez, Teresa
The Spanish housing system historically has been characterised by an imbalance in tenure in favour of homeownership and a social housing stock that is either residual or completely neglected. Currently, the private rented sector represents the most interesting alternative for alleviating the lack of affordable housing available in the country. Simultaneously, tenants living in rented accommodation are experiencing excessive housing burden costs. Policy intervention is required to palliate the negative effects of this situation based on the right to the city and the right to housing principles.

(Universitat de Barcelona, 2014) Bartual Figueras, M. Teresa; Adillón, Román; Espasa Queralt, Marta; Garcia Marimon, Xavier; Simó i Solsona, Montse; Turmo Garuz, Joaquín
