Validation of a heuristic set to evaluate the accessibility of statistical charts
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2022-09) Alcaraz Martínez, Rubén; Ribera, Mireia; Adeva Fillol, Adrià; Pascual Almenara, Afra
A remote user test was performed with two versions (one accessible and another one non-accessible) of three types of web-based charts (horizontal bar chart, vertical stacked bar chart, and line chart). The objectives of the test were a) to validate a set of heuristic indicators for the evaluation of the accessibility of statistical charts presented in a previous work 7; b) to identify new barriers and preferences for users with low vision in the access and use of this content not previously contemplated. 12 users were tested, with a variety of conditions associated with low vision: low visual acuity (6 users), reduced central vision (2 users), reduced peripheral vision (2 users), blurry vision (1 user), sensitivity to light (3 users), Nystagmus (2 users) and color vision deficiency (CVD) (4 users). From a quantitative standpoint, accessible versions of charts were more efficient, effective, and satisfactory. From a qualitative point of view, results verify the relevance of heuristics H2, Legend; H3, Axes; H6, Data source (as data table); H10, Safe colors; H11, Contrast; H12, Legibility; H13, Image quality; H14, Resize; H16, Focus visible; H17, Independent navigation; related to the proposed tasks. As new observations, tooltips were highly valued by all users, but their implementation must be improved to avoid covering up significant parts of the charts when displayed. The data table has also been frequently used by all users, especially in the non-accessible versions, allowing them to carry out tasks more efficiently. The position and size of the legend can be a significant barrier if it is too small or appears in an unusual position. Finally, despite the limitations related to color perception, users prefer color graphics to black and white, so, to target all profiles, it is necessary to redundantly encode categories with colors and patterns as well.

Accessibility in Spanish Universities, evaluation through their policies communications about accessibility during COVID-19
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2022-09) Massaguer, Lluc; Ribera, Mireia; Alcaraz Martínez, Rubén; Satorras Fioretti, Rosa M.; Salse, Marina; Costa Cuberta, Mercè; Térmens i Graells, Miquel; Centelles, Miquel
This research analyzes the announcements issued by Spanish universities during the COVID-19 pandemic relating to students with special needs, to offer a new vision, complementary to existing audits conducted on university websites about technical accessibility compliance. The study approaches the evaluation of accessibility from the point of view of organizational support. The identified measures are mapped onto Universal Design Learning guidelines to give them context and to analyze their coverage. The research shows a landscape with an uncoordinated and uncollaborative approach, with negative consequences in the tackling of remote emergency teaching.

Can we create accessible charts with Microsoft Excel? a review of possibilities and limits, with a special focus to users with low vision
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2024-06-19) Alcaraz Martínez, Rubén; Ribera, Mireia; Roig Marcelino, Jordi; Pascual Almenara, Afra
Introduction: statistical charts are key to data literacy and essential in the process of communicating abstract science concepts and relationships that are difficult to understand through other representations. These types of visualization can present numerous challenges for users with low vision, an often-overlooked group despite its enormous prevalence. To evaluate MS Excel’s as an accessible authoring tool analyzing ATAG 2.0 compliance, and its capability to create accessible charts according to a set of heuristic indicators proposed by the authors. Methodology: evaluate a) the compliance of Microsoft Excel software as an authoring tool with ATAG 2.0 guidelines; and b) the compliance of MS Excel-generated charts with a domain heuristic set. For the heuristic evaluation, apart from the original MS Excel chart (XSLX), three exported versions (DOCX, HTML and SVG) of the same chart were created using all the accessibility features available in the software. Results: regarding ATAG compliance, 48 desired accessibility features applying to MS Excel have been identified and the software meet just 26 of them (54.17%). Regarding heuristic evaluation, the four versions of the chart present a percentage of compliance with the heuristics equal to or greater than 66.66%. The versions that have obtained the best scores are MS Excel original and MS Word exported charts with 72.2% of indicators achieved, followed by SVG and HTML exported charts, both with 66.66%. Even though MS Excel does not meet a good part of the ATAG 2.0 success criteria, it has been possible to create charts with a good level of accessibility following the suggested heuristic principles

Analysis of web accessibility skills required in graphic design and visual communication job offers in Spain
(Association for Computing Machinery, 2024-06) Massaguer, Lluc; Alcaraz Martínez, Rubén
Introduction: design has shifted towards addressing social issues such as sustainability and inclusivity, but ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities is also paramount for fulfilling its social function. Objectives: This study aims to analyse the demand for digital accessibility skills in job listings related to graphic design and visual communication in Spain. We investigate whether companies are seeking professionals with accessibility skills and how this demand is reflected in job postings. Methodology: Job listings on LinkedIn and Domestika related to graphic design, visual communication and web design were analysed between May and June 2023 in Spain. Results: Of the 347 job listings collected, only 2.88% required accessibility skills. The lack of interest is more pronounced among design agencies (10%) compared to other companies (90%). Discussion: The results show a limited interest in digital accessibility within the business sector dedicated to graphic design and visual communication. The scarcity of demand for accessibility skills contrasts sharply with how these companies portray themselves and the values they espouse, such as inclusivity, equal opportunities and non-discrimination. Conclusions: It is crucial to emphasize the need to raise awareness of the importance of involving professionals with knowledge of accessibility in the graphic design and visual communication professions. The companies in this sector must reconsider the focus of their activities in order to integrate accessibility requirements steadfastly and definitively into the products they create, as their communicative mission hinges entirely upon it.

Library and Information Science students and DCMI Metadata Terms: do they understand the resource?
(Dublin Core Conference Proceedings, 2023) Salse, Marina; Sulé, Andreu; Urbano, Cristóbal
The DCMI Metadata Terms website is a basic resource for all those who implement or want to implement Dublin Core in their metadata projects, but also for all those students of Library and Information Science (or related degrees) who are starting in the complex world of information representation. The aim of this paper is to analyze the students' perception of the DCMI Metadata Terms webpage and of the metadata schema itself. This is done through a mainly quantitative survey to the students of the subjects Information Representation: Metadata and Digital Libraries and Repositories of the University Degree in Information Management and Digital Documentation of the University of Barcelona. The results show a moderately positive perception of the website and additional tools such as the Dublin Core User Guide. They also indicate that students have problems understanding the practical application of several terms from the metadata scheme itself (coverage, relation, and contributor, especially). The conclusions offer some recommendations to overcome the difficulties identified by the students, such as improving the clarity in the writing of some sections, the connection between the website and the Dublin Core User Guide and the presence of multilingual pages.

A proposal to bring together the European community of creators and users of OER in LIS: a participatory website around an aggregator
    (2023-05-22) Vallés-Stahnke, Joel; Santos-Hermosa, Gema; Urbano, Cristóbal
The content of this communication is based on a Bachelor’s degree Thesis that proposes a new infrastructure to harvest and give access to existing OER in the LIS field. In this thesis, the need of a community landing page for those interested in OER’s is emphasized. Both in the research carried out in this thesis and in the Intellectual Outputs resulting from the DECriS (Digital Education for Crisis Situations: Times when there is no alternative) project, there is a clear lack of a focal point that gathers the LIS community interested in OER. European communities such as those within DECriS or BOBCATSSS, as well as in other informal networks, which consist of a number of LIS professionals and teachers, and where debates and news are already circulating, could benefit from a "meeting point" where all matters, information and debates around OER would be available. Since there are already a lot of different repositories and aggregators that give access to OER’s, the creation of just another technological tool is not enough to secure its use. Therefore, communication amongst those who use or create them should be an integral part of this new infrastructure. Participatory dynamics prior to the implementation of this proposed new aggregator (or other tool that fits the needs of our community) are needed in order to set the foundations and secure its use and success.

(2022-05) Térmens i Graells, Miquel; Comalat, Maite; Rodríguez Parada, Concepción; Novella, Roser, 1971-

The Information Professional’s Role in the Fake News Phenomenon
    (2020-01) Mirassó Pedrós, Carina; Boté-Vericad, Juan-José
The goal of this paper is to analyze the main characteristics of the Fake News phenomenon in the Information Science field. With the digital era and the use of new technologies, new information consumption habits have appeared, which favor the dissemination of distorted or false information on digital platforms. Information professionals traditionally had control of the resources to satisfy the informational needs of their users. Reference sources were reliable and there was a certain guarantee and control of the information. In the digital era, informational professionals have lost the information monopoly and have been forced to share knowledge with Internet sites and social network sites that offer a broad array of information. The dissemination of this knowledge has led to the emergence of a new concept: Fake News. Information professionals cannot ignore fake News and two essential tasks can be used to ensure truth. First, the use of resources that allow the information professional to filter and curate information to provide an adequate informational resource for users. Secondly, to provide strategies to fight fake news. Accordingly, we propose a guide that provides tools and resources to help users to check information obtained through new technologies. Additionally, these resources, tools and recommendations could enable information professionals to digitally curate information that could later be offered to end users. We have reviewed papers and recommendations from a wide variety of institutions as well as international media to create an implementation guide for the information that is our workspace.

A summary of the article: Methodology for heuristic evaluation of the accessibility of statistical charts for people with low vision and color vision deficiency
(2021) Alcaraz Martínez, Rubén; Ribera, Mireia; Granollers Saltiveri, Toni
This contribution is a summary of the paper: R. Alcaraz Martínez, M. Ribera, T. Granollers (2021). Methodology for heuristic evaluation of the accessibility of statistical charts for people with low vision and color vision deficiency. Universal access in the information society. doi:10.1007/s10209-021-00816-0. The research presented in this paper aims to create a set of heuristics to evaluate the accessibility of statistical charts focusing on the needs of people with low vision (LV) and color vision deficiency (CVD). To do so, a set of heuristics was developed based on the methodology by Quiñones et al. [6]. Once created a first version set of heuristics (17 indicators) was applied on two evaluations. After the evaluations, the list has been amplified to 18 indicators and received other improvements: the scoring was simplified, and the authors created further documentation for evaluators. This research is a first step in the direction to create accessible charts for people with low vision, a user profile normally forgotten in digital accessibility research.
