Abstract
[en] Braid theory is a branch of mathematics that naturally connects topology, geometry and algebra, and is a particularly relevant tool in the study of other areas of knowledge. In this thesis, we begin with the geometric notion of braid, defined as a collection of curves that intertwine in space, and progressively construct the algebraic theory of the braid group, providing it with a finite presentation introduced by Artin in 1925 [1]. From this algebraic description, we develop the necessary tools to study the conjugacy problem, one of the fundamental decision problems in group theory, and present in detail the solution introduced by Garside [16], which provides an effective method to solve this problem in the braid group.
[ca] La teoria de trenes és una branca de les matemàtiques que connecta de manera natural la topologia, la geometria i l’àlgebra, i constitueix una eina especialment rellevant en l’estudi d’altres àmbits del coneixement. En aquest treball es parteix de la noció geomètrica de trena, definida com una col·lecció de corbes que s’entrecreuen a l’espai, i es construeix progressivament la teoria algebraica del grup de trenes, dotant-lo d’una presentació finita introduïda per Artin el 1925 [1]. A partir d’aquesta descripció algebraica, es desenvolupen les eines necessàries per estudiar el problema de la conjugació, un dels problemes de decisió fonamentals en teoria de grups, i es presenta de manera detallada la solució introduïda per Garside [16], que proporciona un mètode efectiu per resoldre aquest problema en el grup de trenes.
