Poder, cruzada y dinero: causas religiosas de la “empresa de Inglaterra” (1558-1585)

Abstract

[esp]La Guerra Anglo-española enfrentó a España e Inglaterra desde 1585 hasta 1604, durante los reinados de Felipe II e Isabel I, respectivamente. Estudiar y analizar las causas religiosas que llevaron a ambas potencias a la confrontación directa es el objetivo de este trabajo. La cuestión dinástica, la construcción del anglicanismo, el papel del Papado y la presencia de ambas potencias en América, los Países Bajos e Irlanda serán hechos claves en los años previos a la guerra, de 1558 a 1585. A través del estudio de estas causas religiosas podremos ver los intereses de cada uno y discernir cómo la religión afectó a ambos para convertir finalmente este conflicto en una guerra abierta.

[eng] The Anglo-Spanish War confronted Spain and England from 1585 to 1604, during the reigns of Philip II and Elizabeth I, respectively. To study and analyze the religious causes that led both powers to direct confrontation is the aim of this work. The dynastic question, the construction of the Anglicanism, the role of the Pope and the presence of both powers in America, the Netherlands and Ireland will be key facts on the years before the war, from 1558 to 1585. Through the study of these religious causes we will be able to investigate the interests of each power and discern how religion affected to both them to turn this conflict into open warfare finally.
