Abstract

Hypatia, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher in the Egyptian metropolis of Alexandria, is one of the last representatives of the classical pagan knowledge. Born in one of the most cosmopolitan cities of the Empire, Hypatia witnessed how, all along her life, Christianity established itself as the dominant religion inside the Empire’s borders. In this new conjunction, Alexandrian Catholic patriarchs dared to decree the demolition of the most symbolic buildings of the intellectual life of local paganism, such as the Serapeum or the Great Library. Although Hypatia can not be supposed to be one of the protagonists in the defence of the already agonizing classical culture, patriarch Cyril surely considered her a threat to his charismatic leadership over the Alexandrian plebs and ordered her brutal execution. At its time, the death of Hypatia (415) did not arouse much interest among contemporary sources. However, in recent times, her misfortune has been considered an icon of the death of classical paganism.
