Resum

[eng] This dissertation analyzes the allomorphy of the prepositions a (‘at, to’), en (‘at, in’), and amb (‘with’) across all dialectal varieties of Catalan. It argues that each preposition displays a set of allomorphs (understood in the strictly phonological sense) characteristic of each variety, and it rejects the epenthetic nature of the consonants n or m(b) that some previous studies had proposed for certain contexts. Only a small number of varieties show no allomorphy in one or two of these prepositions, which confirms both the vitality and the broad scope of the phenomenon in Catalan. The data come from sources that reflect informal spoken usage, the domain in which allomorphic variation most frequently appears. Several available corpora have been used, along with written sources documenting colloquial usage, one oral source, and a set of guided questionnaires designed to complete the dialectal dataset. The analysis follows the principles of Optimality Theory, which allows to model the interaction between phonological, morphosyntactic, paradigmatic, and semantic-pragmatic conditionings in the selection of the optimal allomorph in each context. The dissertation has two main goals and a third complementary one. The first is to describe exhaustively the allomorphic distribution of a, en, and amb depending on the linguistic context across all Catalan dialects. The second is to provide a phonological analysis of the origin and behavior of these allomorphs, based on a detailed examination of the phonological, morphosyntactic, paradigmatic, and semantic-pragmatic factors involved in each case. The third goal is to develop a theoretical framework for the notion of specificity, a key concept both in the alternation of the preposition a and in the choice between a and en. Specificity is difficult to define because it interacts with several areas of the grammar; the dissertation therefore contributes to establishing a more precise characterization of this notion. The results show that the phonological context accounts for the allomorphy of the preposition a in the varieties that present it, as well as for that of amb in Northern Catalan and in Alguerese. In these cases, the alternation serves to avoid ambiguities in a particular phonological environment and can be considered a case of external allomorphy. Conversely, paradigmatic pressure explains the allomorphy of en and amb in the varieties that display it and also partially affects the preposition a. The three prepositions form the paradigm {a, en, amb}, characterized by strong etymological, semantic, and phonetic affinities. This paradigm shows tendencies toward homogenization both in form and in distribution, but it also exhibits some contrastive phenomena aimed at preventing confusion among the three prepositions. The factors involved in allomorphy can be grouped into two main blocks. The first includes those that promote the creation of allomorphy: external allomorphy; allomorphy with dual phonological and syntactic conditioning (in short words beginning in a consonant in syntactically prominent positions, especially in initial positions within the syntactic structure); the presence of specifiers; and paradigmatic pressure. The second block includes the factors that reduce or block the allomorphy thus generated: the degree of specificity of the noun phrase and the general syntactic context. With respect to these factors, three aspects are particularly noteworthy. First, regarding the preposition a, a noun phrase receives a specific reading when it expresses location (especially physical location) and when it identifies a unique referent. The dissertation shows that, in some cases, the normative treatment of a and en does not adequately reflect informal usage. Second, the syntactic implications are manifested in two ways. On the one hand, the syntactic position of specifier clearly favors the allomorphy of a and, when it is the first specifier position (as in interrogative words), it can generate new allomorphs in all three prepositions. On the other hand, depending on the syntactic function and semantic weight of the preposition, the allomorphy of a and en varies, whereas that of amb remains stable. Third, the preposition a displays the richest and most complex allomorphic system, confirming its sensitivity to factors of various kinds.
