Del olvido a la memoria y la presencia: estrategias de visibilización de los movimientos sociales afrovenezolanos

Abstract

[spa] El objetivo de este artículo es analizar el papel de los movimientos sociales afrovenezolanos que en las últimas décadas han desarrollado actividades y reivindicaciones para afirmar la especificidad cultural y reclamar derechos históricos en el seno de una nación que, bajo el discurso oficial del mestizaje homogeneizante, ha ignorado tradicionalmente su carácter pluriétnico y en particular su componente afrodescendiente. La acción de las organizaciones negras venezolanas responde a una estrategia de visibilización, de rescate de la memoria y afianzamiento de la identidad, que tiene su más reciente exponente en la inclusión de la variable étnico-racial en el censo 2011.

[eng] The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of the Afro-Venezuelan social movements that in the last decades have developed activities and demands to affirm cultural differentiation and to claim historical rights in the context of a nation that, under the official discourse of crossbreeding and homogeneity, has traditionally denied its multiethnic character, in particular its Afro-descendant component. The actions of Venezuelan black organizations are based on a strategy of visibility, of rescuing of memory and consolidation of identity, that has its more recent example on the inclusion of the racial and ethnic variable in the 2011 census.
