Abstract
Si viéramos las moléculas como vemos los engranajes de un reloj, y tuviéramos la manera de manipularlas, podríamos encajar las piezas en un dispositivo molecular, igual que un experto monta un mecanismo de relojería. Los seres humanos hemos visto las moléculas desde diversas perspectivas, incluyendo la de los artistas, los químicos cuánticos o los videntes, aunque durante la mayor parte del siglo XX nuestras mejores fotos las hemos obtenido por difracción de rayos X. En los últimos años se han desarrollado una serie de técnicas microscópicas y espectroscópicas que nos acercan cada vez más a la figura del relojero molecular. Ifwe could see molecules in the same way we see the gears ofa watch, and ifwe could manipulate them, we should be able to fit the bits and pieces of a molecular device much in the same way a watchmaker assembles a clockwork. We human beings have seen molecules from a variety of perspectives, including those of the artists, the quantum chemists or the clairvoyants. However, for most of the XXth century our best photographs ha ve been obtained by means of X ray diffraction. In recent years a series of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques have been developed that take us closer and closer to the dream of the molecular watchmaker.
