Història, sentit i essència: la poètica de W. G. Sebald

Abstract

Aquest treball pretén estudiar l’obra de W. G. Sebald, centrant-se en la seva producció novel·lística: Vertigen, Els emigrats, Els anells de Saturn i Austerlitz. L’objectiu és realitzar diverses aproximacions als textos per tal d’analitzar les dificultats amb què es troba el lector, a causa de la forma de les novel·les, a l’hora d’intentar compendiar els grans temes i problemàtiques que plantegen les obres. S’examinarà la relació que hi ha als llibres entre el subjecte i el món i es compararà el corpus de l’autor amb alguns dels elements més característics de la literatura postmoderna. Fet això, es durà a terme un estudi de com s’entenen els conceptes d’història i de record, per acabar discutint si els textos aspiren a arribar a alguna mena de sentit en el món que proposen. The aim of this dissertation is to study the work of W. G. Sebald, focusing on his four major novels: Vertigo, The emigrants, The rings of Saturn and Austerlitz. Following different approaches, the purpose here is to comprehend why it is tough to develop an idea of what the essence of Sebald’s work is, due to the texts’ specific form. Some aspects analyzed here include the relationship between the subject and the world in the novels, or the way in which terms such as «history» or «memory» are understood. Furthermore, a comparison with some postmodern novels will help to fathom the kind of aesthetic that Sebald is proposing. Finally, some research around the idea of «sense» in the novels and its possibility will complete the study. Keywords: W. G.
