Fotógrafos de la química: documentación y arte

Abstract

Este artículo destaca el trabajo de algunos fotógrafos que han contribuido con una visión artística a la documentación gráfica de la química, a través de sus protagonistas, sus laboratorios, las substancias y sus reacciones. En primer lugar se repasa un repertorio de retratos de químicos destacados realizados desde la invención del daguerrotipo hasta el final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En segundo lugar se presta atención al trabajo del fotógrafo alemán Albert Renger-Patzsch, bien conocido por sus fotografías de la naturaleza y de arquitectura urbana e industrial, pero que nos ha legado unas imágenes simples y fascinantes a un tiempo de material de vidrio para el laboratorio, así como al del fotógrafo científico estadounidense Fritz Goro. En tercer lugar se destacan ejemplos de fotógrafos y científicos que han ilustrado con especial acierto diversas reacciones químicas en libros ricos en imágenes. Por último, se cita brevemente el trabajo de algunos fotógrafos más próximos a la física y de otros con una incursión anecdótica pero interesante en el mundo de la química. This paper highlights the work of photographers that have contributed with an artistic vision to the graphic documentation of chemistry, through its protagonists, their laboratories, the substances and their reactions. First a collection of portraits of famous chemists, made since the invention of the daguerreotype until the end of World War II, is reviewed. In second place, special attention is paid to the work of the German photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch, well known for his photographs of nature and urban and industrial architecture, but who has left us simple and fascinating images of glassware for the laboratory, as well as to the Northamerican science photographer Fritz Goro. Third, examples of photographers and scientists who have successfully illustrated several chemical reactions in books are given. Finally, brief comments are made on the work of photographers more related to physics, as well as that of other artists with scarce but interesting contributions in the field of chemistry.
