Abstract

This Open Educational Resource (OER) explores the role of libraries in supporting LGBTIQ+ youth, particularly during the coming-out process and in their search for reliable, inclusive information. It highlights the responsibility of libraries, in line with IFLA’s human rights framework, to advocate for sexual minorities and to ensure equitable access to credible information resources. The resource examines common information sources used by LGBTIQ+ youth, including social media platforms, online communities, podcasts, television series, and peer networks. It also identifies key challenges, such as the questionable reliability of online information and the perception that libraries are not always safe or inclusive spaces for accessing LGBTIQ+-related content. The OER proposes concrete strategies for library services, including the acquisition of materials on LGBTIQ+ topics, the creation of clearly labelled and dedicated collections, and the implementation of educational and supportive programmes. It emphasises the importance of safe, inclusive, and informed library environments that foster trust, representation, and empowerment. Developed within the framework of the European project GEDIS (Gender Diversity in Information Science), this resource contributes to inclusive library practice and to the integration of gender and diversity perspectives in higher education.
