Resum
[eng]This dissertation examines the historical and cultural evolution of the sense of smell in Greco-Roman Antiquity, analysing scent as a fundamental category of social, medical, and religious organisation. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Senses Studies and the concept of the modern “olfactory silence” (Larrea Killinger, 1997), it traces the transition of odour from a marker of inner truth to an instrument of gender control and moral segregation. The research is structured around four axes: a philological analysis of classical terminology (ὀσμή, odor, sagax) revealing the displacement of olfactory language towards moral evaluation (Allen, 2015); the technical materiality and archaeometry of the unguentarii industry; the sociopolitical and gender dimension, in which smell functions as a marker of female bodily “porosity” (Lawrence, 2019) and class boundary (Synnott, 2003); and the relationship between miasma theory and the roman pursuit of pure air as a therapeutic tool. The dissertation concludes that smell operated in the ancient world as a language of social identity, whose subsequent rationalist devaluation entailed a loss of epistemological status in favour of an abstract visual regime.
