Tut, Pooh, and Hum: A Corpus-Driven Pragmatic Analysis of Onomatopoeic Interjections in Sherlock Holmes and Contemporary Fiction

[spa] Este estudio explora y compara la frecuencia y las funciones pragmáticas de tres interjecciones onomatopéyicas, tut (tsk, tch), pooh y hum, en la serie completa de Sherlock Holmes de Arthur Conan Doyle y en la sección de “Fiction” del Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). Se emplea un enfoque guiado por corpus, utilizando AntConc 4.3.1 para recopilar datos y examinar el uso contextual. Las funciones pragmáticas de las interjecciones se analizan a través de las taxonomías de actos de habla de J. L. Austin y John R. Searle. Los resultados muestran que las tres interjecciones ocurren con una frecuencia significativamente mayor en Sherlock Holmes que en COCA (Fiction). Además, sus actos de habla van más allá de los expresivos e incluyen actos directivos, asertivos y compromisivos. [eng] This study explores and compares the frequency and pragmatic functions of three onomatopoeic interjections, tut (tsk, tch), pooh, and hum, in Arthur Conan Doyle’s complete Sherlock Holmes series and the “Fiction” section of the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). A corpus-driven approach is employed, using AntConc 4.3.1 to collect data and examine contextual usage. The interjections’ pragmatic functions are analyzed through J. L. Austin’s and John R. Searle’s taxonomies of speech acts. Findings show that all three interjections occur significantly more frequently in Sherlock Holmes than in COCA (Fiction). Furthermore, their speech acts extend beyond expressives and include directive, assertive, and commissive acts. Depending on context, they can convey a range of functions such as emotional expression, encouragement, commitment, and mood shifts.
